AERIES INSTALLATION - ACCESS 97

General Information before you begin:

  • Workstation requirements:  Although difficult to pinpoint a specific set of requirements to meet the needs of every user, we've determined that a Pentium class machine (500Mhz and higher) with 128MB RAM will run the Aeries program very efficiently.  For power users, (a user who works with Aeries the majority of their day) we recommend a Pentium III or higher, as well as, increased RAM to boost performance.  In all, when making a final determination on system requirements,  you will need to consider each users utilization of Aeries, as well as any other programs running simultaneously on that machine.

  • Server Requirements:  When determining server specifications, your district needs to consider how it will utilize Aeries.  We recommend using a dedicated file server for Aeries with at least 700mhz processor and 512MB RAM.  If your district is planning on using ABI (Aeries Browser Interface), and has more than 85 teachers, we recommend that you implement a dual processor server.  Smaller schools can use a single processor server without compromising performance.

  • The Aeries Installation program does not register any components into the Windows Registry. Therefore, you will not be required to reboot your system after installation.

  • The Installer is designed for a stand-alone installation of Aeries, therefore you will need to modify the installation for networked environments.  See Installation Process for details.

The Installation Process:

  • Run the INSATLL8.exe be clicking the "install now" button.

  • The installer is password protected, you will need to register on our website to get the password if you have not already. (REGISTER HERE)

  • You will be prompted for the installation directory. (We recommend keeping the default C:\EAGLE)

  • Once you have selected the appropriate directory, the installer will automatically complete the installation in the chosen location.

  • An "Aeries" icon will be installed into the program files.  For added convenience, you can copy this icon to the desktop.

     If you wish to create a NEW icon, be sure to set the target path as follows:

     "Microsoft Access SPACE Security File SPACE Aeries Program"

                   (i.e. - "C:\Program Files\microsoft office97\Office\MSACCESS.EXE" /wrkgrp C:\EAGLE\system.mdw C:\EAGLE\sch.mde97\Office\MSACCESS.EXE" /wrkgrp C:\EAGLE\system.mdw C:\EAGLE\sch.mde)

  • The "INSTALL8.exe" will install an older version of Aeries.   You will need to update to a current version.  This may be accomplished by extracting the "Update99.exe" to the install directory selected above (C:\EAGLE), and copying the "AERIES.MDE" file  into the %SYSTEMROOT% directory (C:\WINDOWS or C:\WINNT)

Workgroup Security:  

  • Aeries uses Microsoft Workgroup Security (MWS) for username and password storage.  Permissions into Aeries are controlled via MWS.

  • In order to run Aeries, You MUST use the provided workgroup file. (SYSTEM.MDW) This workgroup file is located in the install directory. (C:\EAGLE)

  • It is possible to specify the workgroup information file in the Aeries icon command line by adding /WRKGRP %PATH%\SYSTEM.MDW ("%PATH%" is the location of the SYTEM.MDW) between the path commands MSACCESS.EXE and SCH.MDE.

  • The complete "Target" path should read: C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE\OFFICE\MSACCESS.EXE /WRKGRP %PATH%\SYSTEM.MDW C:\EAGLE\SCH.MDE

  • This will allow you to run other Access applications without having to login.

You are now ready to run Aeries for the first time!  The installer has placed demo data files on your hard drive which you can attach to the first time you run Aeries. We have included several model schools to choose from, including Elementary Schools (SCH01990, SCH01991, SCH01992), Intermediate School (SCH01993), High School (SCH01994), Continuation School (SCH01995), and many others.

It is important to keep your AERIES software versions up to date! We are constantly striving to develop a better product, with increased functionality, and frequently release product updates.  Current versions of Aeries are crucial in order to receive the most effective and highest level of support.  We recommend updating your version of Aeries once a month.

Supplemental Information:

  • The SCH.MDE and AERIES.MDE are a compiled version of the source code for the Aeries application. It cannot be shared off a server as a distributed application.

  • Along with the program files and drivers (.dll), the installer will place a font into the installation directory. This is for users who wish to print bar codes and will need to be installed manually.
